Externship Application

Requirements:

– Time commitment of 40 hours/week for 2-8 weeks is required
– Veterinary student currently enrolled in an AVMA accredited program
– Proof of liability and personal insurance coverage
– 18+ years of age
– Submission of application at least one month prior to desired externship start date

Housing/Travel:

– Extern is responsible for travel to and from the externship site
– Extern is responsible for finding housing; KRVC and/or BRP may offer assistance in
securing housing if available/applicable

Compensation:

– Most students qualify for a stipend to cover travel, housing, and other expenses during
their educational experience
– Outside of a potential travel stipend, this is an unpaid, educational experience

Description:

Kern Road Veterinary Clinic in Fowlerville, Michigan, is welcoming extern applications for their
small-animal and equine mixed practice. Opportunities exist in both or either departments.
KRVC currently has nine veterinarians, 4 of whom practice small animal and 5 who practice
equine medicine. We provide equine ambulatory services for a large portion of Southeast
Michigan, including emergency care. KRVC also has a beautiful equine haul-in facility with a
surgical suite and six stalls. Small animal preventative care, medical, surgical, and dental cases
are managed in the clinic. We have two wet-tables in our treatment area, a surgery suite, an
imaging room, and five examination rooms for our small animal patients.
Our equine department has many fun toys such as endoscopy – respiratory and gastric, three
D/R units, multiple power dental units (terafloat, versa float, swiss float), multiple ultrasound
machines, ProStride, advanced dental tools, cryotherapy, StableLab SAA readers, shockwave
unit, acupuncture tools and herbal medicine, and more. The small animal department has a
digital radiograph machine, dental radiograph machine, multiple anesthetic monitoring &
recovery tools, tonopen, ultrasound, and more.
