Appointments for your Horse

Kern Road Veterinary Clinic is equipped to see equine patients through both our ambulatory and haul-in services. This flexibility allows us to individualize the treatment that your horse receives.

To schedule a farm call with an ambulatory veterinarian, please call the office with a general day in mind. In order to minimize travel time and fuel costs, we attempt to schedule appointments together in general geographic regions. We ask that you attempt to be as flexible as possible on the day of your farm call and phone us the morning of your scheduled appointment to get an approximate time of the doctor’s arrival. Of course, emergencies always take precedence over routine procedures and this could cause some variation. Additionally, please make the receptionist aware of all of the procedures that you will require during your farm call. This will allow us to see clients in a timely fashion, to be prepared upon arrival, and to meet with clients at their scheduled time.

There are considerable advantages to hauling your horse to our practice for their appointment. Results from blood work and radiographs are often available immediately, specialized equipment is readily at hand, mobile service charges are not applied, and additional staff is available to assist when needed. Appointments are typically scheduled first thing in the morning.

Admissions for your Horse

Admissions are scheduled for a specific drop off time at least 1 hour before closing the day before the scheduled procedure. Please allow at least 30 minutes for check in. You will be asked specifics about feeding instructions for your horse and for contact information for the following day. Please be sure to bring any supplements or medications that your horse will require.

All horses that undergo anesthesia receive pre-anesthetic blood work. This blood work consists of the following:

* Chemistry panel  this tells us information about major organ function which will assist us in determining the most appropriate medications to use.

* Complete Blood Count details information about Red Blood Cell Count and White Blood Count which can indicate infection, inflammation, anemia or other potential anesthetic risks.

The top 4 reasons to test your horse before anesthesia:
  • You deserve peace of mind. Testing can significantly reduce medical risk and ensure your horses health and safety.
  • They cant tell us when they don’t feel well. A healthy-appearing horse may be hiding symptoms of a disease or ailment. For example, a pet can lose up to 75% of kidney function before showing any visible signs of illness. Testing helps us evaluate health up front, so we can avoid problems related to anesthesia.
  • Testing can reduce the risk and consequences. If pre-anesthetic results are within normal ranges, we can proceed with confidence, knowing that anesthetic risk is minimized. On the other hand, if results are not within the normal ranges, we can alter the anesthetic procedure, or take other precautions to safeguard your horses health and reduce the risk of potential complications.
  • Testing can help protect your horse’s future health. These tests provide baseline levels for your horse and become part of his or her medical record for future references.

After Hours Emergency for your Horse

Contact information is especially important to ensure that your horse receives the timely attention that it deserves.
